Are there certain foods that you absolutely love now, but when you were younger you either couldn’t stand or couldn’t even fathom eating? Avocados are one of those foods for me. I know, crazy, right?? While they are now a staple in my diet, there was a time when the thought of eating that creamy green fruit (it’s not a vegetable, technically) made me want to gag. Mind you, I had never actually TRIED avocados. They just looked gross to me.
I honestly don’t remember how old I was when I finally tried avocados (I have the worst memory, like legitimately), but what I do remember is that I tried them in the form of guacamole. And then my life changed! The creamy, mild taste of the avocado married perfectly with the crunchy, sharp bite of the onions, the sweetness of the tomatoes and the freshness of the cilantro. I couldn’t stop eating it!
Fast-forward to today, and one of my most frequent impulse purchases at the grocery store is a big ol’ tub of store-made guac. That’s actually how I came to try Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Guacamole. For me, the worst part of my guacamole addiction is the calorie count. Yes, avocados are great for you, and the fat they contain is good fat. But they have a lot of calories, and I can’t seem to keep my portions in check with something that tastes so good!
The “reduced guilt” is what really sold me on that Trader Joe’s guac. How do they lessen the guilt? They add Greek yogurt to give more volume to the guacamole with minimal calories (and added protein!). It’s genius, really, and I wish I had thought of it first. And taste-wise, it adds a little tang to the guacamole that’s really delicious.Continue Reading…
